question What does mathematics teach that is not just calculation?

short version It teaches the habit of making thought accountable: definitions, assumptions, cases, and consequences.

Mathematics is not only a collection of techniques. It is a discipline of precision: a way of forcing thought to stop waving its hands and say exactly what it means.

This is why it matters so much in computer science. Graphs, induction, logic, counting, and invariants are not isolated course topics. They are the grammar behind algorithms.

still unclear How do you keep the precision without losing intuition, especially when learning a subject for the first time?
