question What does competitive programming train besides speed and algorithm recall?

short version It trains structure recognition: the ability to read a problem, ignore its story, and find the known shape hiding inside it.

Competitive programming is often described as memorizing algorithms. I think the real skill is different: reading a problem carefully, discovering its hidden structure, and reducing it to something known.

The implementation is the final layer. The hard part is recognizing whether the problem is about graphs, greedy choice, dynamic programming, binary search, invariants, or something else entirely.

still unclear How much of this skill transfers to slower engineering work, where the problem is not packaged as a puzzle and the constraints are social as much as technical?
